A loud refrigerator is the worst. If the refrigerator in your kitchen is a bit louder than it usually is there are some easy place that you can look at while attempting to find the cause. There are many fans on a home refrigerator that could create strange noises. The appliance might also not be level too. Or you might have a compressor that’s wearing out. If your refrigerator is much louder when the ice maker is making ice, the sounds could be from a broken a water valve.

There are one or two obvious things that should be checked. Like is the refrigerator filled too full? A refrigerator that is too can result in glass containers and other food items to clink together. This will create a lot of annoying noises inside the refrigerator that is not ideal because the refrigerator is running and thereby creating a minor vibration.

If you have a refrigerator that has a water dispenser or ice maker but you don’t have the water line connected, be sure you shut off the dispenser and the ice maker. There is usually a button on the dispenser on the refrigerator that can be used to turn off the water dispenser. And as far as the ice maker, you need to pull up the metal bar inside of it. If the refrigerator was installed near a wall, it could cause the normal operating noise to seem a lot louder. This is a result of the echo of the sound of the appliance. Pull the refrigerator out a bit from the kitchen wall and see if that helps. A refrigerator should be around 2 inches away from the back wall of the kitchen to limit the sound.

If it is not one of these simple and common fixes, it’s time to explore the issue further. The majority of the time, the refrigerator fans are the cause of a refrigerator that’s loud. There are fan blades that sometimes get clogged and dirty. Often times the fan motors do too. There’s a condenser fan in the refrigerator and an evaporator on refrigerators too. Sometimes the condenser fan will get a coating of dust or fuzz on it and then should be cleaned often. If the dust gets too heavy it will sometimes wear out the bearings inside of the fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

The first thing to do is to unplug the refrigerator. The condenser fan is usually located in the back of the refrigerator. A lot of the time you will want to have a wrench or screwdriver to remove the back panel. Once exposed you will notice a fan in there. If it’s covered in dust and dirt, take a rag and gently wipe it off. While you are in there check the coils as well. These are typically near there and will be covered in the same dust and grime that the fan is. Cleaning the coils will only take a few minutes but it will certainly help the refrigerator run efficiently. This is actually a very common problem that can cause a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Turn the fan blades in the refrigerator. Do the fan blades spin easily? If not it means the fan motor bearings are not working. This is a simple repair, as the fan assembly is usually a component that can be purchased online and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. However, before attempting any of this, ensure the refrigerator is not plugged in. Do the same process for the evaporator fan, which is located behind the freezer. This isn’t usually the issue, as this particular fan is protected by being within the walls of the refrigerator. But, when the noises are coming from the top of the refrigerator that’s the area to check.

If it is possible it could be the compressor, the large, usually gray or black object under the refrigerator near the coils, we recommend calling Triumph Thornton Appliance Repair. That is not a repair a homeowner should try.
